]]> Are Millennials The Future of Nightclubs

I recently came across a article from a blog called New Theory Magazine, claiming that Millennials Are Abandoning Nightclubs and Why.

They seem to blame Millennials for Nightclubs across the country shutting down before passing their first year of being in business. And they go on to say why they actually think that Millennials are not going to Nightclubs.

I however don’t agree. I personally think they reason why so many Nightclubs are closing down is simply for 2 reasons.

Reason #1 – It is to easy to obtain a liquor licenses these days.

Any fool with a little bit of money anAre Md the dream or ambition of owning their own nightclub or bar, can actually go find a place with cheap rent, apply for a liquor license and open up within 3-6 months. Just because you know a few DJ’s and have a little bit of a following on Facebook does not mean you should be able to open your own Nightclub.

Reason #2 – Lack of Operators.

Let’s say you are lucky enough to have the money to open a nightclub and you were approved for the license, and you have found a great location you can afford, Ask yourself this –

Do you know how to design your venue?

Do you know how to Operate your venue?

Keep in mind there is a HUGE difference between Managers and Operators. Managers Maintain Business, Operators Build and Succeed Business.

Rather then hiring true professional Nightlife and Hospitality Operators. Too many new Nightclub owners go out and hire their friends and family, or they just simply hire off of what they feel they can afford. Keep in mind that having a license to serve alcohol comes with the responsibility of keeping your customers and your employees safe.

This is why I think Nightclubs and Bars across the World are failing so quickly. And this is why people like Kirby Bond, Jesse Waits, Peter Stringfellowand Victor Drai are featured in the Official Nightclub Hall of Fame™. True Leaders of our Industry recognize and know they can’t do it alone, True Leaders of our Industry hire actual Operators to run their venues. And as I said before Operators Succeed where Managers just Maintain.

With that being said, I wanted to give a quick shout out to some of the best Operators in our Industry Today. These are the ones, keeping our Nightclubs and Bars Safe, and Thriving and Ever Evolving.

Nightclub owners are finding it very difficult to keep their doors open when a large scale of their clientele only stop by once in a blue moon and penny pinch on their drink orders. It’s all about the pre-game anyway, right? It comes to no surprise that an average of 6,500 venues have been breaking down earlier and earlier each night and officially closing up shop before passing the first year mark in their business- at least according to J.C. Diaz, the Executive Director of theNightlife Association.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Entertainment mogul Victor Drai is set to join the Nightclub Hall of Fame this week after launching three different clubs in Las Vegas in 30 days.

A ceremony set for Tuesday will honor Drai for opening the rooftop Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub and early-morning venue Drai’s After Hours at The Cromwell in May. He also opened the gay nightclub Liaison inside Bally’s casino in June.

Drai is already well-known for launching the upscale Tryst and XS clubs at the Wynn casino.

The Nightclub Hall of Fame was founded by bar experts Ryan Dahlstrom and Preston Rideout and honors innovators in the nightlife industry throughout the year.

In 1993, after the birth of his first child with second wife Loryn Locklin, Drai made the decision to open a restaurant, which he felt would be a more family-friendly career.[3] He contracted French chef Claude Segal, who’d replaced Wolfgang Puck at the upscale restaurant Ma Maison in 1985.[14] With Segal, he opened the restaurant Drai’s in the L’Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel and it quickly became an iconic success.[9]

In 1995, Drai decided to open a second Drai’s in Las Vegas. A couple years later, he started the afterhours club, “That started everything,” Drai stated.[15] In December 2013, he opened a steakhouse on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles called Rare by Drai’s.[16]

Drai owned a now-closed venue in March 2010, Drai’s Hollywood; a rooftop restaurant, pool, and nightclub at the W Hotel in Hollywood.[17]

In 1997, Drai opened Drai’s restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip.[18] Two years later, Drai added a nightclub to the restaurant, re-branding it Drai’s After Hours.[19] In Vegas Seven’s 2012 Nightclub Awards, Drai’s After Hours won “Best Place to Disappear”.[20] He currently operates Drai’s After Hours nightclub at The Cromwell Las Vegas.[21]

In 2007, Drai took over La Bete at Wynn Las Vegas and re-branded it Tryst.[22] It has a 90-foot waterfall and lake in the middle of the club. In 2012, Vegas Seven’s Nightclub Awards awarded Tryst “Best Place to Impress”.[23] In 2013, Tryst placed #8 in the Top 100 Nightclub & Bar Roster for Nightclub & Bar Magazine.[24]

Drai opened XS nightclub at Encore Las Vegas in 2008.[25] In 2010, XS won Nightclub & Bar Awards for “New Club of the Year” and “Mega-Club of the Year.[26] ” In 2013, Nightclub & Bar Magazine awarded XS the “Mega-Club of the Year.[27] ” Technomic, the Chicago-based hospitality market research firm that partners with Nightclub & Bar magazine on The Top 100, named XS number one nightclub in the nation for 2010.[28] In 2010, Drai was bought out of his managing partnership at Steve Wynn’s Tryst and XS to pursue other endeavors.[29]

Drai’s opened his latest Las Vegas club project Drai’s Beach Club & Nightclub on Memorial Day Weekend 2014 in Las Vegas at The Cromwell Las Vegas.[30] This 65,000-square-foot venue has a party pool and an indoor/outdoor club spread out over two levels on top of the new Cromwell Hotel.[31]

Nightlife czar Victor Drai will be inducted into the Nightclub Hall of Fame next Tuesday at his new Drai’s Beach and Nightclub atop the Cromwell and honored for opening three venues in the past 30 days. It’s one of the highest honors in nightlife.
Said Victor: “Since opening the original After Hours (Drai’s After Hours at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, now the Cromwell), as well as launching Tryst (at Wynn Las Vegas) and XS (at Encore Las Vegas), my goal has always been to create the most beautiful and sophisticated venues imaginable.

“I believe that a great club is more than just the DJ. It is about the design, the experience, the service and creating something new and unique.

“With the opening of Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub, I have been able to take all my work and passion and create a rooftop club that was once unimaginable and just three weeks later bring back After Hours to its original space and create the city’s first gay nightclub, Liaison, in a casino on the Strip.

“It’s an honor to receive this award and the recognition from the Nightclub Hall of Fame.”

Still think the whole social media concept is a waste of your time when it comes to marketing your club? According to Ryan Dahlstrom and Michael Sartain of Rideout Media Group and RescueMyBar.com, it’s time to think again.
“The television industrial complex is what we have believed to be the best way to sell product and services over the last 50 years,” Sartain relays. “The internet has changed this. It took 50 years for radio to get to 50 million listeners. It took 12 years for TV to reach 50 million viewers. It took Twitter 18 months to get 50 million users. To put it lightly, the way social media works is exponentially more powerful than television, radio or print media.”
With that being said, here are the key points in the social media marketing arena that Dahlstrom and Sartain covered at the 2014 Gentlemen’s Club Owners EXPO during their Promo Staff Training Seminar.

Ryan Dahlstrom Key Not Speaker at ED Expo

The truth about ROI. “Everyone says that you can’t do an ROI (Return on Investment) with social marketing,” says Dahlstrom. “That’s bullshit. Social media is the only way to do a true ROI. You can track exactly what you’re spending, making, etc. It’s the only ROI that you can not only truly track, but that you can also see exactly where your traffic is coming from.”
Welcome to the dark side (of Facebook).  “Look up unpublished posts—or dark posts—on Facebook,” emphasizes Sartain. “I can’t tell you how helpful these are. You can target individual people by their spending habits, age, interests and numerous other factors. In most advertising, if you can get one percent of people to engage with you, that’s fantastic. With dark posts, even the shittiest post will get five percent. I’ve seen dark posts get 45 percent. Why? Because I’m only sending dark posts to people I know like my product/service or similar products and services.”
Instagram is your best friend.  “You can’t put links on Instagram, so this turns many club owners off,” says Sartain. “But if you’re a good marketer, you realize that this form is better for you. You work at gentlemen’s clubs. You have something magnificent to show off—images. If they can’t see what your club is like, if they can’t see it digitally, they will go right down the road to your competitor.

“Another thing to include in those photos are the things you are doing to contribute to your community,” continues Sartain. “For example, some of the large gentlemen’s clubs have charity events. They take pictures of these events and post them on their social media, which includes Instagram. Even if all you do is put a box outside for a food drive and at the end of the night take a picture of all the food you collected, that will get reposted and you will get nothing but good press from that.”
Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook (by Gary Vaynerchuk). “One of the most important books you can read on social media marketing is “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” by Gary Vaynerchuk,” says Sartain. “The jab, jab, jabs are the funny posts or posts of something cool going on. Half of the posts I do are just laugh-out-loud funny. I don’t want people to just be interested in your clubs so they go to your Instagram. I want them to be interested in your Instagram. Do you understand the difference? You want people to come back just for the sake of seeing your latest posts on Instagram or other social media sites. The right hook is drink specials. The right hook is free coverage if you do such and such. It’s what brings them into your club after you have gotten them interested with the jabs.”
Build your social army. “Don’t hire some geeky guy outside your company to do all of your social media,” says Dahlstrom. “Get someone inside your club to build your own WordPress site. It is so ridiculously simple. You need a fan page for your company. It’s called social layering. Also, pick someone in your company to have a personal page so you can open up other pages within your own company. Create multiple accounts within your company and share stuff within accounts—all of which you own. Have a DJ add such and such, a bartender add such and such, all different content that leads back to your fan page (WordPress site) for your club. Now you have a social army.

“It’s really important for you to have other people—even you, the owner or manager—reach out to people as an individual and then bring them back to your club’s site,” continues Dohlstrom. “I reach out as Ryan Dahlstrom. I don’t reach out as Nightclub Hall of Fame. But in the end, all of my social media sites, personal or otherwise, lead back to my company’s page.”
Social media internships. “Think about offering social media internships,” Sartain suggests. “Think about how many 20-year-old guys out there, who are already so much better at social media than you are, who are willing to do an internship with your club. I have 14 unpaid internships right now. Guys want to work for you, and these are the most devoted people you will find that want something more than money—they want the connection associated with your club. And if you run into a hurdle with the university not wanting to work with a gentlemen’s club, set up a new entity. I’m telling you, it’s not difficult to do. There are so many people who are fans of your gentlemen’s clubs that are willing to work with you.”
Make yourself SEO-able. “If you don’t have a blog, you need to get one ASAP,” says Dahlstrom. “Blogs feed SEO. You can’t go into your website and update all six of its pages every single week. Put a blog feed in there. That’s what all your stuff feeds into and what feeds SEO, so when people search different things on the internet, they can find you. Even if your website is mediocre, create a one-page kickass home page and link it to a blog that you update weekly.”
